The controlling administrator of the Barnett Shale Energy Education Council explains how accustomed gas can ultimately advance air above - if it is acclimated added to ammunition cars and accomplish electricity instead of dirtier fuels like agent and coal.
(Vocus/PRWEB ) February 2, 2009 -- The controlling administrator of the Barnett Shale Energy Education Council explains how accustomed gas can ultimately advance air above -- if it is acclimated added to ammunition cars and accomplish electricity instead of dirtier fuels like agent and coal.
Ed Ireland, Ph.D
The bread-and-butter allowances of accustomed gas assembly in the Barnett Shale are now accessible to North Texans - tens of bags of new jobs, alternating with signing bonuses and account ability checks to bags of acreage owners who've busy their mineral rights. But addition additional of accustomed gas assembly has yet to be appreciated, according to the Barnett Shale Energy Education Council's controlling director, Ed Ireland, Ph.D.
As the cleanest-burning hydrocarbon, accustomed gas can advice advance air above by abbreviation carbon emissions into the atmosphere - if it is acclimated added for both electrical bearing and transportation.
This actuality is acutely important because it is bright that ecology issues are traveling to be the active force abaft oil and gas adjustment for the accountable future. As an aperture salvo, two ecology groups, the San Juan Citizens Alliance of Colorado and WildEarth Guardians of New Mexico, filed a accusation in federal cloister adjoin the Environmental Protection Agency recently, citation the EPA's 'failure to assure communities and the altitude from air abuse emitted civic by oil and gas drilling.'
According to the lawsuit, beneath the Clean Air Act the EPA is appropriate to analysis and amend apple-pie air regulations every eight years. The clothing alleges that the EPA has bootless to amend two sets of apple-pie air regulations originally issued in 1985 and 1999, and has bootless altogether to affair a appropriate third set of regulations. 'The aftereffect is a amount of oil and gas operations and pollutants spewed by those operations are not bound in any way,' the accusation states.
Whatever the aftereffect of this and approaching lawsuits, stricter regulations will aftereffect in accretion the amount of accustomed gas production, which ultimately will abate production, abnormally in 'unconventional' plays such as the Barnett Shale area assembly costs are higher. Unfortunately, this aftereffect is at altercation with the ambition of abbreviation carbon emissions and convalescent air quality, because accustomed gas is the cleanest afire hydrocarbon.
A few 'factoids' about apple-pie afire accustomed gas. It is mostly methane, which has alone one carbon atom with four hydrogen atoms. This compares to gasoline which has eight carbon atoms and 18 hydrogen atoms and agent which as 14 carbon atoms and 30 hydrogen atoms. As a result, afire accustomed gas produces beneath NOx, charcoal and greenhouse gases than added petroleum fuels.
There is boundless abutment for affective the abridgement into a new era based on renewable and apple-pie sources of energy. But the absoluteness is that we will be application hydrocarbons for decades to appear while these new technologies and basement are accepting developed. Therefore it alone makes faculty to advance accustomed gas as a arch ammunition to accomplish these ecology goals.
One of the key means accustomed gas improves air above is if it is acclimated to aftermath electricity instead of coal. Clean atramentous technology offers the abeyant for cleaner electrical bearing but is not a absolutely developed technology. Natural gas-fired electrical plants accept been acclimated for decades and are the cleanest antecedent of ability for electrical bearing next to nuclear.
There are abounding added avenues for application accustomed gas to advance air above adequately bound that are assuredly accepting added attention, such as switching agile cars and trucks to accustomed gas. Natural gas is actual able-bodied ill-fitted for use by city-limits buses, debris trucks, and accumulation trucks. Such cars run anchored routes and acknowledgment every black to accumulator areas area accustomed gas fueling stations can be installed.
Natural gas cars (NGVs) are accurate and reliable. Over eight actor NGVs are in use common and the amount is rapidly increasing. About 110,000 NGVs accomplish on U.S. roads, including 11,000 alteration buses, 2,000 debris trucks, 3,000 academy buses and 12-14,000 cars in shuttle and a advanced array of barter applications.
NGVs are aswell actual quiet and accordingly abate babble abuse -- in actuality the decibel akin of NGVs is 80-90% beneath than their agent counterparts. If you accept anytime been abaft a Fort Worth city-limits bus, you admiration if it is even running. Finally, life-cycle costs are lower for NGVs than for gasoline and agent vehicles. Not alone does ammunition amount less, but aliment costs are aswell lower compared to gasoline and agent vehicles.
The basal band is that accustomed gas from the Barnett Shale and added accustomed gas fields in the U.S. should be a key aspect of our ecology policies, abnormally at a time if we charge to accumulate our economies advantageous abutting to home.
Ed Ireland is controlling administrator of the Barnett Shale Energy Education Council (www.bseec.org), a association ability that provides advice to the accessible about gas conduct and assembly in the Barnett Shale region. Its ambition is to accommodate fact-based advice about burghal conduct from sources such as industry, government, organizations and institutions of college education. The Council is a bunch of 11 of the arch activity companies operating in the Barnett Shale.
